Professional Development Workshops for Teachers of English

These workshops are designed for busy teachers who perhaps can not commit to a full course. Each workshop focuses on a key teaching and learning issue, with time being spent on discussion of underlying theory. The main aim of all the workshops is to provide teachers with practical classroom activities and techniques, and to make the teaching of young learners and young adults more effective. Participants will receive a Response training certificate.

Building vocabulary (2 hours)

Wednesday 4 February 0900-1130 €25

Teachers are often concerned that their students’ vocabulary range is limited.  In this workshop we will discuss the importance of acquiring a wide and appropriate lexical range, and look at how this can be done both inside and outside the classroom.  There will be ample opportunity to try out different techniques and activities for making teaching and learning vocabulary more effective.

Introducing technology into the language classroom

Wednesday 11 February 0900-1130 €25

Technology-phobia restricts our classroom potential!  In this workshop we will consider what classroom technology is available to teachers and the costs that are involved in setting up language learning/teaching IT, and look at how using Powerpoint presentations, the internet, computers and the interactive whiteboard (IWB) can add to our portfolio of approaches and techniques, as well as resources.

Supervising teachers and providing feedback (2 hours)

Wednesday 18 February 0900-1130 €25

Primarily aimed at school owners and teachers in supervisory positions (but also useful for all teachers), this workshop will focus on classroom observation.  We will discuss different approaches to teacher supervision, and the purpose of observation; furthermore, we will consider the challenges of observation, from both the supervisor’s and the teacher’s points of view, and finally observe part of a lesson and discuss the teacher’s performance.

Preparing your students for Cambridge ESOL YLE, KET & PET speaking examinations (4 hours)

Saturday 28 February 0900-1400 €50

An area of concern for students and learners is the speaking component of the Cambridge ESOL examinations.  This workshop aims to reassure teachers that through simple and fun preparation in the classroom, learners can easily be prepared so that they perform well on the day of the exam.  We will look at how learners are assessed, observe some sample interviews, and apply general assessment criteria.  Furthermore, teachers will go away with a selection of activities which focus on building learners’ confidence in speaking.

 Teaching monolingual classes (2 hours)

Wednesday 4 March 0900-1130 €25

This workshop will provide practical advice on the key issue of how to deal with students using their first language in the English language classroom.  We will discuss the relevance of L1 and its usefulness in learning English, while at the same time suggesting how to increase the amount of English spoken.  There will be time to try out various activities designed to encourage teachers to examine and develop their own feelings about using L1, and some practical tips on how to increase and improve the rate of progress in monolingual groups.
